Hi! I'm April

I am a traditional, plus digital artist and photographer.

Self portrait. 2005. Acrylic on canvas.

My artwork has always been influenced by the great Abstract Expressionist Norman Lewis, not only for the beauty and complexity of his artwork but the meaning behind what he created. I’ve also been inspired by Jacob Lawrence, another American artist who used his artwork to tell the narratives of American history from those whose voices are often overlooked. Both of these artists used their artwork to speak truth to power. These great artists used their artwork to bring awareness to social problems. Another strong influence on my artwork is Kerri James Marshall and his revolutionary redefining of Black in modern art.

Separation. 2007. Acrylic paint on canvas.

Forest. 2005. Pencil sketch colored in Photoshop.

At times my artwork makes political statements about the state of society during their creation. And other times my artwork tells the intimate details of my life and love. All my artwork pays homage to the ancestors who have provided the most profound technique of artistic expression known to humanity, Abstraction. Abstraction in art is a visual style resulting from the cultural appropriation of African forms and techniques for representation.
